Matilda is being presented by Capital Theatre Trust and G&T Productions Ltd. 
The season will commence at the St James Theatre, Wellington, from 23 September 2026.

Adults Audition Overview

Auditions for all principal, supporting, ensemble and swing roles, plus backing vocalists, will be held on the following dates:

  • Thursday, 12 February 2026 - 5.00 pm until 10.00 pm

  • Friday, 13 February 2026 - 5.00 pm until 10.00 pm

All adults auditioning for this production (with the exception of the roles of Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey, Mr Wormwood, Michael Wormwood and Mrs Phelps) are requested to attend the adults' dance workshop on Sunday, 15 February from 10.00 am until 12.00 pm. More details under the Dance video section.

All adults auditioning for the roles of Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey, Mr Wormwood or Mrs Wormwood should prepare the required Matilda musical excerpt.

Children's Audition Overview

Auditions for all the children's roles (including Matilda) will be held on the following date:

  • Saturday, 14 February 2026 - 9.00 am until 3.00 pm

The children's auditions will be held as a workshop with all children attending.  The Audition Workshop will be split into two sections, and all children will attend only one of these:

  • Those going for the roles of Bruce, Eric, Tommy and Nigel

  • Those going for the roles of Matilda, Lavender, Amanda, Alice and Hortensia

Closer to the audition workshop, we will confirm the exact timing for these groups. However, please be prepared that this will fall sometime between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm on Saturday, 14 February 2026.

We will release the children as we can throughout the day and will advise parents/guardians as we work through the process.  

All children auditioning for this production are required to learn the dance from the children's dance video, which will form part of the workshop on Saturday, 14 February 2026. More details under the Dance video section.

All children auditioning should also prepare the required excerpt from the musical Matilda.

What should you prepare for the Audition?

See below for the Matilda audition information pack, which outlines all requirements for the audition and the individual roles.

Please follow the instructions in the audition information pack for the role you are auditioning for.

Please read the instructions in the audition information pack that give clear instructions as to what music and dance excerpts you are expected to prepare. We will provide a pianist for all auditions. Backing track facilities will not be available.

All music excerpts and sample tracks can be downloaded from the Auditions Material page (the password is available on the audition bookings page).

Both versions of the dance video will be available for viewing from 1 November 2025.  

If you are planning to put yourself forward for more than one role, please learn only the song excerpt for your preferred role.

You should also download the relevant audition form below and complete it prior to your audition.

Everyone is required to provide a head and shoulders photo to accompany their completed audition form. You may also wish to attach your theatrical CV to your audition form.

Dance video

Adults
Everyone auditioning for an onstage role (except for the roles of Miss Trunchbull, Miss Honey, Mr Wormwood, Michael Wormwood and Mrs Phelps) is required to review and learn the audition dances that are available on this page from the 1st of November 2025.  You will be required to perform this in a group situation during the adult dance workshop on Sunday, 15 February 2026, from 10.00 am until 12.00 pm.  Please note that there are two adult dances to learn.

Children
Everyone auditioning for a children's role is required to review and learn the audition dance that is available on this page from the 1st of November 2025. This dance will then form part of the workshop and be performed in small groups on Saturday, 14th February 2026.

Location and Commitment

Rehearsals for Matilda will commence in late June 2026.  Rehearsals will continue through to moving into the St James Theatre from 10 September 2026. The season will commence on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. Auditions are strictly by appointment only.

  2. Auditionees may be photographed and recorded as part of their participation in the audition process for casting purposes.

  3. Auditionees may be asked to be recorded, either inside or outside of the audition room, with such recording to possibly be used for promotional content of the production process including, but not limited to: news stories, programming for broadcast and social media. Such recording will be voluntary.
